Lucien Lunaris Opens Birthday Stream in a Cake Hat, Announces ‘Behind the Veil’ Series
Fans presented a Pokémon-card fanzine and a crowdfunded Bubble Mew card, and a run of fellow First Stage Production talents dropped into a voice call.
FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION — Lucien Lunaris of FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION (3aEN Avallum) spent his birthday stream on Tuesday working through fan gifts, announcing a new stream format and fielding a stream of surprise voice-chat visitors, all on about three hours of sleep after his 3D mini live the day before. The stream ran 227 minutes.
He opened by greeting viewers with a creme brulee balanced on his head as a hat, joking that he had nowhere else to put it, and said he had forgotten his age past 130. Early on he said a full retelling of the mini live and of his new original song “Monster” would wait for a later stream. Midway through he announced that stream: “Behind the Veil,” a *zatsudan*, or chat stream, that will follow each cover or original-song release and go into the lyrics, the artwork and the reasoning behind a project, with guests when a release is a group effort. Short afterparties will continue alongside it.
“No matter how expensive a card or how cheap a card is, it’s more about the story, the journey that it took to get to where it’ll be in the end.” — Lucien Lunaris, on the Bubble Mew card fans bought for him
The bulk of the first half was the birthday tag, where he read out a fan-made zine, “Lunar Invasion,” a keepsake of Pokémon-style cards in which fans of his appear in place of the creatures. He said he could not show it on screen because of the Pokémon content, so he read the text aloud and took in the details, including a credits page and messages from dozens of contributors. The final pages revealed that fans had pooled money for a real Bubble Mew card, in both a simplified Chinese and a Japanese print. Lunaris, who said he had never planned to spend money on one, said the story behind the card made it worth more than any other. He later said he would read the 42 Super Chats on a follow-up stream.
Around two hours in, he said he planned a solo karaoke stream close to the end of the year, calling it not quite confirmed but “kind of” so. At about 2:29 he opened a voice call, and a series of First Stage Production talents joined one after another to wish him a happy birthday, congratulate him on the concert and tease him about his sleep. In the call he said he was considering a Repo collaboration but was unsure how to rotate players fairly given the game’s six-player cap.
Chat filled with birthday greetings and heart emotes through the opening minutes, and viewers sent Lucien off with wishes for rest as the stream closed at about 3:46.
