Harris Caine Reaches the Soul Baby Ending in Second Session of Reaper Dating Game
He also sketched the game’s reaper with sunflowers on stream, and said he had not realized his choices were steering him to the ending.
INDEPENDENT — Harris Caine finished the visual novel A Date with Death on Monday, closing out a 135-minute second session with the “soul baby” ending, in which the player’s character kisses the Grim Reaper who had spent the story trying to claim his soul.
The session picked up on day four of the story’s week-long bet, in which the Grim Reaper tries to take the protagonist’s soul. Over the next days of game time, the reaper explained that his own soul had been thrown out of balance and that a fragment of it had stayed behind in the protagonist. Later he showed up outside the protagonist’s fifth-floor window with stolen sunflowers and revealed that the name Kasper was his real one. Harris read the lines in character and laughed along, at one point asking viewers to look at the character who had just flown in.
“It’s a fun game. It’s a really good game.” — Harris Caine, closing the stream
The story turned in the final stretch. The reaper told the protagonist that his soul carried the touch of life itself, which explained why he kept escaping death and why his affection seemed to heal people and pets. On the last day, the reaper said he was considering refusing to take any more souls, then came through the open window. After a confession scene and a kiss, the game ended. Harris said he had not realized the choices he made were leading him there, and called it a happy ending, then a spicy one.
Midway through, Harris paused the story to draw the reaper with red eyes, pink cheeks and a sunflower, working from a reference image, and invited viewers to enjoy the result. He opened the stream by asking viewers to type “Harris top” to be counted, and the first minutes of chat filled with it. Chat peaked again when the reaper appeared at the window, when he confessed, and at the ending, where viewers wrote “W game.”
Harris thanked viewers for watching from the start and said he expected to stream again on Friday.
