Shikinagi Akira Turns a ¥2,000 Horse Bet Into ¥5,800 in the Middle of a Study Stream
The Nijisanji streamer placed the win bet during a break in a nearly three-hour session of Korean vocabulary drills.
NIJISANJI — Shikinagi Akira, a Nijisanji streamer, turned a ¥2,000 win bet on a Tokyo horse race into ¥5,800 on Saturday while running a Study With Me stream, a quiet work-along broadcast in which the streamer studies on camera and viewers do their own tasks beside it. Akira checked the result during a study set, with the session still under way.
The stream was Akira’s first Study With Me in about two weeks. Akira opened by saying the throat had been slow to recover, then explained the format: mostly silent studying on the Pomodoro technique, 25 minutes of work followed by a five-minute break. The material was Korean vocabulary. Akira wrote each word out by hand on an iPad, then checked the spelling and talked through the example sentences. Partway through, Akira turned off the Apple Pencil’s double-tap setting after it kept interfering with the writing.
“First win in a while.” — Shikinagi Akira, on seeing the race result
Breaks were spent talking. Akira recited a Japanese tongue twister and part of the classic *uirō-uri* sales patter from memory, and talked about the pull of daily practice in language and dance. At the start of the final stretch, Akira reacted to word that an album was on the way, saying the stream’s description box would need updating, and said CDs had been sent to Akira’s home and family home. Akira added that practice for an upcoming live had been increasing.
The bet came in the last break. Noticing a 3:45 p.m. race at Tokyo Racecourse, Akira joked that watching horse racing between study sets was what adults did, then put ¥2,000 on a horse ridden by jockey Lemaire to win, calling it a bet for fun. Later in the final set, Akira checked the official racing site and found the horse had won. Final odds of 2.9 meant about ¥5,800, a profit of ¥3,800 that Akira said would cover dinner. Akira also said a larger stake would have paid more.
Akira ended the session with some of the day’s vocabulary still unlearned and the iPad’s battery nearly drained from a full charge. Akira said the next Study With Me might come next week, and announced a chat stream for 10 a.m. the following morning. Chat reacted with congratulations and jokes about racing during a study stream, and viewers sent 16 Super Chats over the broadcast.
