Shylily Tells Chat No One Escapes Data Collection During Long Twitch Stream

The independent Twitch streamer said she has a cyber security team and still has little control over what is collected about her.

Shylily pushed back on viewers who dismissed online data collection as a buzzword during a 309-minute Twitch stream on Sunday, telling chat that anyone who uses Google, Facebook or LinkedIn should assume their data is somewhere in the system. The exchange, about 34 minutes in, came after chat had been joking that personal data was already being sold on the black market.

She said she takes steps to limit what is collected about her but knows most of it is collected anyway. “I literally have a team for literal cyber security,” she said, adding that what they tell her can and cannot be done online leaves her with little control. Unless a person is living off the grid, she said, their data is being collected. She also told chat she did not want her community sounding uneducated, a remark that drew laughs and a run of jokes about the “shrimpies,” her name for her viewers, sharing one brain cell.

Later stretches were lighter. Around 1:19, chat suggested recoloring her model orange, and she tried it, only to find the new textures clashed with her zombie toggle in VTube Studio, which she said would have to be redone. At about 2:34, she asked chat what Kool-Aid was, got answers such as powdered juice and colored sugar water, and said she planned to try it on a trip to the United States in a couple of weeks. At 3:03, the stream followed a demonstration of a mechanical adding device. One voice on the stream added 66 and 85 and got 151, and chat joked it was glad electronic calculators exist. A raid of 23 viewers arrived shortly after.

In the closing minutes, Shylily said she had made good progress in a short session of a game in which she was building homes for characters, including a farmer, a hunter and a blacksmith. She said she would fix a barn next and build a house beside it, then ended the stream. Chat’s closing messages thanked her for the stream and praised the changes to her model that day.
