Viewers Identify a Decade-Old Manga in Under 10 Minutes on Torino Kaori’s Drawing Stream

INDEPENDENT — Viewers of Torino Kaori’s Friday stream tracked down a manga she had half-remembered from the internet more than a decade ago, and they did it in under 10 minutes. The independent illustrator described what she could recall of the story, asked chat to help her pin it down, and watched as viewers matched it to a work collected in an anthology published in 2017. “How did it come up from just that? It hasn’t even been ten minutes,” she said, adding that she was impressed and would be relying on her viewers from now on.
The broadcast was a *zatsudan*, or chat stream, built around a drawing session. Kaori worked on an illustration of an *okami*, a Japanese innkeeper or proprietress, based on Rayquaza from Pokémon, and asked viewers for material for an interview with the character and for scenarios for a short comic series. An illustrator has to think about far more than drawing, she said: the job is closer to a comedian’s, and coming up with material takes longer than the art.

She described the Rayquaza-based character as the highest-ranking of three figures, alongside characters based on Groudon and Kyogre, but one who keeps stumbling into trouble of her own making. She said she likes characters who are the strongest and most senior yet turn out to be scatterbrained. Chat helped her recall that Rayquaza can Mega Evolve without a held item once it knows the move Dragon Ascent, and she said she wanted to work that into the interview.
Kaori also spoke about an online argument over advance payment for illustration commissions. She said she asks new clients for payment up front but offers other payment methods, and that the right arrangement depends on each side’s scale and track record rather than a blanket rule. The stream drew 12 Super Chats, and she read out thanks to supporters near the end.
By the close, she said the illustration was close to finished but the interview was not yet worked out, and that she wanted to post it as early as next week. She said her next stream would be Monday, and that she planned to visit a pasta restaurant chain that had come up in chat.
