Kyuru Rin’s roleplay character, Riri Bunga, was offered a route to the manager’s job at Soul Sushi, a restaurant on the #DistrictV2 server, during a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) roleplay stream that ran more than nine hours. The restaurant’s manager said she expected to be called away to another job soon and asked whether Riri would let her train her as a replacement. Riri said she was nervous and did not know if she was manager material, and asked first whether managers were paid more.

The stream opened with Riri on foot in a thunderstorm, walking to a bank to cash ten paychecks and paying to have her work uniform fixed. She said she had taken the job for the money, and was skipping taxis to save every penny because her sworn sister, Ruru, was sick. Once Ruru recovered, Riri said, Ruru would cover shifts so Riri could go out and party.

“Sometimes it really isn’t roleplaying. Sometimes I’m just lazy. I’m a lazy customer service worker, but I get by, you know?” — Kyuru Rin, on recommending whatever sushi was in her pocket

Getting a car turned into a running problem. No taxi drivers were on duty, and Riri walked long stretches across the city, ducking police and helicopters along the way. Past the five-hour mark she found a car in the middle of nowhere, opened it with a lockpick, bought a jerry can and put fuel in it, only for the dash to read engine 0%. She left it behind. The server also went down more than once, at one point letting in only about half the players trying to connect, and Kyuru Rin’s own internet dropped once before she came back.

At the restaurant, Riri recommended maki sushi and Sprunk, the in-game soft drink, to nearly every customer, and later explained on stream that it was often just whatever was in her pocket. Nemesis Daybreak, a new hire she had matched with on an in-game dating app, showed staff how to use the free camera to take photos for the restaurant’s social media push, and Riri posted the results on Birdie, the game’s social network. She also paid for a three-card tarot reading about her love life, which told her not to resist change.

The restaurant’s grand opening was set for the next day, after a mayoral election, and Kyuru Rin said Riri planned to vote and then help set up. Near the end, a tsunami warning sent Riri and her co-workers ducking behind the counter. Kyuru Rin described Riri as torn between enjoying the work and a criminal past that could put the job at risk.
