Kronus Plays a Whole Life in ‘One in 8 Billion,’ From Guangzhou Birth to Death at 76
The Vietnamese VTuber’s character went through a failed sports exam, an abandoned doctorate, two marriages and a chain of tutoring centers, with chat voting on many of the choices.
INDEPENDENT — Kronus, a Vietnamese independent VTuber, played a browser-based life simulator called One in 8 Billion from start to finish, taking a randomly assigned character from birth in Guangzhou, China, through failed exams, an unfinished doctorate, two marriages and a successful chain of tutoring centers to death at 76 in the United States.
The stream was titled around being reborn in Africa, but the game’s random draw placed the character in China instead: a boy born in August 2026 to a family in the top 20 to 40 percent of income, with no father present. Kronus explained the premise as a what-if, asking what would happen if they were reincarnated as someone else rather than working as a VTuber, and named the character Đinh Diệt Thần. The character’s mother was named Cao Tuệ. Early in the stream Kronus fixed a brief lag problem that Kronus blamed on the broadcasting software.
“It feels like I’m living someone else’s life, not my own.” — Kronus, on playing the game
Kronus put many of the game’s choices to chat. The character failed a tryout for a football team and then an entrance exam for a sports high school, picked study abroad in the United States over military school, and, after a run of chat messages urging it, majored in education. A master’s degree was followed by a doctorate, which the character left after three years and returned to China. A year of preparation for the civil service exam ended in failure, and the character’s mother paid off the family’s debts. Kronus later put the character’s savings into a tutoring center, which grew into a chain.
Along the way the character had a son, was divorced, became a U.S. citizen, brought a mother to the United States, remarried and lost both a mother and a stepfather. Kronus drew parallels to their own life at several points, saying a first smartphone came at 17 and describing leaving a master’s program to return to Vietnam during the pandemic. The run ended with the character’s death at 76 in the United States, and a closing summary listed a life lived in two countries.
Chat answered the game’s decisions in real time and kept up a running joke about the character’s bad luck. Nine Super Chats came in during the stream. Kronus said the game offered plenty of lessons.
