Ryugasaki Rene took Final Fantasy IX out of a mine and onto the game’s Outer Continent on Sunday, in the fourth stream of a first-time playthrough that ran just over five hours. Rene opened by recapping the previous stream from five days earlier, then worried aloud over whether Quina, the character left behind when the town of Cleyra was destroyed, had survived. Quina is Rene’s favorite character.

Quina turned up on the way as if nothing had happened, and chat answered with messages such as “Quina’s here!” From there the stream was largely about feeding Quina: Rene weakened monsters just enough for Quina to eat them, a balance that repeatedly went wrong when a monster was finished off too soon. Quina picked up White Wind, Goblin Punch and Matra Magic along the way. When Quina was knocked down again and again in a fight against an agent of Queen Brahne, chat called it “brutal spawn-camping.”

“I’ve come to think of this game as food education.” — Ryugasaki Rene, while setting up a meal for Quina

After the mine, the party reached the dwarf village of Conde Petie. Rene had trouble keeping compass directions straight, then took a tip from chat, pictured a map of Japan, realized that east is on the right and called it the biggest lesson of the day. Later, the party found a hidden village of black mages who had fled, where Vivi heard how short the black mages’ lives are.

At the dwarf village’s gate, the party learned that only couples who had gone through a wedding rite could pass, and Zidane and Garnet went through it. Soon after, the party met a 6-year-old summoner girl, the last of her clan, who guided them through the ruins of her village and joined them. At the Iifa Tree she broke the seal that had held the way shut, which earned a ruby and the new summon Carbuncle, a support summon that casts Protect and Reflect on the whole party.

Rene closed by saying the story would resume at 2 p.m. the next day. On the schedule for the week, Rene said Wednesday would be a day off, Thursday would bring an 8 p.m. collab, and Friday a singing stream. Rene was also considering a singing stream on Tuesday, a national holiday, in the late afternoon.
