shachi too ran a karaoke stream on Monday to test a new audio setup, and found that vocals and backing tracks stayed aligned on some songs but drifted apart on others.

Before singing, shachi too said they had spent about two hours configuring the stream so that microphone audio came from separate audio software rather than straight into the broadcast. They described themselves as not good at mixing and said they were struggling with audio latency, because the computer could not handle the sample rate that would have worked best. They warned viewers that the voice was already tired from the setup and that the stream was a test, and asked viewers to say if the singing sounded out of sync.

“This is a testing stream. I’m testing new audio stuff. It’s a test more than anything.” — shachi too, at the start of the stream

The trouble showed on “Still Into You,” which went out of sync even though every track came from the same source. Shachi too said that was strange, since some songs were fine and others were not, and tried loading a karaoke track into the audio software itself, which worked on stream even though it had failed in earlier tests. Hearing their own voice a fraction late through headphones made singing that way difficult, they said. Later songs included “One Less Lonely Girl,” and a run through the familiar “I’m Yours” and “Unwritten,” which they said came across in sync. Afterward they wondered aloud why “Still Into You” had been the only one that was not.

As the hours of singing wore on, shachi too cut several songs short, saying their voice was giving out and that they did not want to keep clearing their throat. They tried “Mr. Brightside” and ended with “Baby Beluga” before stopping, saying they did not know why the sync differed from song to song but would keep working on it.
