Sugar Skulls Crack on Scarle Yonaguni’s Day of the Dead Handcam After a Three-Year Wait
The streamer’s cheap molds failed, so she shaped the rest by hand and decorated them with writing gel before the stream turned to anime, Red Bull and the week ahead.
NIJISANJI — Scarle Yonaguni spent Sunday’s Day of the Dead handcam stream, a stream in which a camera shows her hands at work, trying to make sugar skulls, a project she said she had put off for three years while waiting to find a mold. When she pulled the first skulls out of the mold she had finally bought online, they cracked and fell apart. She said the mold was meant for ice.
She had prepared the skulls that morning because they need seven or eight hours to harden. Without meringue powder, she followed a video tutorial that used sugar and egg whites, and she said the same tutorial showed her that the skulls could be shaped by hand. The freehand ones held up better than the molded ones, and she switched to them. Stores had no icing she could find, so she decorated with writing gel, which dripped.
“Why does everything I touch die?” — Scarle Yonaguni, after a sugar skull cracked in her hands
On stream she added swirls, lashes, a mustache and a small nose to the skulls. While lifting one to show the camera, she dropped it and its head came off, and a second broke as she handled it. She left to wash her sugar-coated gloves, then came back with a store-bought skull her landlady had bought, to show what the finished ones are supposed to look like. Her verdict on the evening was that it was “the worst stream idea” she had ever had.
The stream wandered widely around the craft. She opened by showing a white-and-pink Gundam model kit she had bought that day, along with a Pokemon card, and described a trip to a Hello Kitty cafe. She talked at length about the anime *Smoking Behind the Supermarket*, which she called her comfort anime, and argued over what counts as a romance series. She also marked one year without Red Bull, saying she had stopped drinking it while eating healthier and found it tasted like medicine when she tried it again. She said she hopes to do karaoke about once a month.
Looking ahead, she said she was keeping her voice quiet because she had a recording to make the next day. She floated the game Dress Maker for Tuesday, Castlevania for Wednesday and a Gundam build on Sunday, plus a Tagalog-learning stream. The broadcast ended after about five and a half hours, when she said she had remembered a deadline.
