Kakyoin Chieri Opens Halloween Movie Week With a Final Destination Watchalong
The 2000 film is the first of six in the series, and Chieri said she plans to return for another viewing around 9 p.m. the same night.
.LIVE — Kakyoin Chieri of .LIVE began a week of Halloween-themed movie watchalongs on Sunday with Final Destination, the 2000 film that opens a six-film series. The stream ran just under two hours, with chat pressing play in sync with her. She said the week grew out of Saturday’s chat stream, where the talk turned to wanting to watch movies.
Chieri said she had seen the series once, long ago, and that watching the newest film recently made her want to go back to the earlier ones. Before starting, she warned that the film is gory and told squeamish viewers to close their eyes, while noting that the first installment should be manageable. A number of viewers said they were seeing it for the first time. She watched the subtitled version on Amazon Prime, and showed an illustration recreating the film’s poster, something she said she does for every movie watchalong. More viewers noticed it this time, she said. She ate Cookie Monster cookies she had bought on a trip to Universal as the film ran.
“As the series goes on, the chain reactions get more precise.” — Kakyoin Chieri, on the sequels
The film opens on a school trip flight to Paris. Chieri said she gets nervous on planes, and she narrated the takeoff, the turbulence and the crash scene with a run of “this is bad” before it turned out to be the protagonist’s dream. Chat called it a climax from the very first minutes. Later, as the lead, Alex, drew suspicion, she remarked that on screen he looked like the culprit, and chat said the same around the one-hour-14-minute mark.
She explained to newcomers that the series is known for its chain-reaction deaths, which she called “Pythagora Switch” scenes, in which one coincidence piles on another. Chat answered each with “No way that happens.” She asked repeatedly that the dog be spared and cheered when it ran off. When the film ended, chat filled with applause, and Chieri called it an entertaining chain reaction.
She said the series gets better as it goes: the chain reactions grow more refined from about the third film. Chieri said she would stream another viewing around 9 p.m. that night, settling on that time after asking chat which they preferred, and that archives would stay up for anyone who could not watch live. On Tuesday, she said, she has a collab with two other talents on a game that is not horror, a rarity for her.
