Ranze Tokiniwa Returns From a Cold With a 13-Song Singing Stream

The night before, Tokiniwa had tweeted that a noon stream depended on whether the sore throat cleared; by the opening minutes it had.

Ranze Tokiniwa returned to singing on Thursday with a noon-hour karaoke stream, 13 songs long, after several days off with a cold. Tokiniwa opened by saying the sore throat had been settled, and called the day a rehab stream.

The night before, Tokiniwa said, it had been touch and go: the throat still hurt slightly and the nose was running. A tweet had promised a noon stream only if the morning went well. “Ah, good. My throat doesn’t hurt. I’m happy,” Tokiniwa said, adding that days of a sore throat make a painless one feel like a small luxury.

“In one night, a human being heals this much.” — Ranze Tokiniwa, on her recovered voice partway through the set

Before the first song came a long chat. Tokiniwa talked about November arriving too fast, wanting to make a Christmas cake instead of buying one, and a cake cafe famous for oversized slices, then ran a poll on the color of a new scarf, with burgundy, gray, white and orange in the running. A trip planned for mid-November, to a scenic spot near the mountains, came up too, and Tokiniwa asked viewers to share autumn-leaf photos with the stream’s tag. Tokiniwa also said something to be enjoyed together with viewers is in the works.

The singing began about 40 minutes in. Songs included “Kabutomushi,” which Tokiniwa picked after recalling a beetle that landed on a shoulder last summer, “Kawaranai Mono” and “Himitsu,” and the set closed with a song about being the cutest. Midway through, a phone’s voice assistant responded on its own at the end of a song, which Tokiniwa laughed off. After a run of harder songs, Tokiniwa said the throat had recovered “ten times” better than expected and that 13 songs in, it was not worn out.

Chat greeted the opening with the stream’s “konranze” hello and cheered the quick recovery. Five Super Chats came in. Tokiniwa closed by saying regular streams resume the next day, and that the voice lessons taken just before the cold could finally be put into practice.
