Gigi Murin cleared the arcade mode of Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising and defeated its hidden boss, Versusia, during a three-and-a-half-hour practice stream, using Sandalphon, a character she said she plays out of love rather than skill.

She opened by telling viewers she was practicing for a tournament on November 2 at 5:00 p.m. PST, and noted that daylight saving time ends the day before. Dusting off a game pad she said she had forgotten how to use, she spent the first stretch in training mode with a flowchart beside her, working through Sandalphon’s four elemental forms, his water-ball zoning game and the punish drills. “I’m imagining the numpad,” she said, explaining that her keyboard has none.

Against the computer in arcade mode, button mix-ups were the main obstacle. She repeatedly hit the wrong button for her ultimate and said she needed a thumbtack on it. A running joke formed around the “wake-up DP,” the reversal move she kept reaching for. Versusia proved the hardest opponent, with heavy damage, health regeneration and fast meter gain. Around two hours in, Gigi found a ball-and-rush routine the bot could not handle, and she took the match. “A win is a win is a win,” she said afterward. She also joked that the bot seemed to be learning from her.

At about 2 hours and 12 minutes she finished the run and heard the achievement for clearing arcade mode and the hidden boss. “You don’t need combos to win,” she said. She kept going, saying she wanted a deliberate win against Versusia instead of one won by mashing buttons. After many more rounds she took one off Versusia with Sandalphon’s wind form and called herself satisfied.

Gigi said the tournament will be a collab with Fumi, who plays a lot of fighting games and who she hopes will teach her combos, and that it will be played against real people. She asked viewers not to snipe her and to “go into rank noobs only.”
