Shirayuki Reid Ends Six-Hour Mahjong Soul Session in the Black With a Final-Game Win
Reid brought back Asuna, a character he had set aside, and a self-drawn win in the last Throne Room game turned the day’s total positive.
NEO-PORTE — Shirayuki Reid of Neo-Porte’s 0th Generation finished a six-hour session of the online mahjong game Mahjong Soul (雀魂) on Friday night with a win in his last game, putting his total for the day in the plus after hours spent below even.
The stream was titled as an apology to Asuna, a Mahjong Soul character he had stopped using after a run of poor results. Reid opened by joking that he might have PTSD and was afraid to put her in, and said he only wanted to play without regrets. Partway through, he told viewers that the characters he was not using had not been dropped for good, only resting.
“Whatever anyone says, I’m in the plus for today, so Asuna did her best. Everyone, give Asuna a round of applause.” — Shirayuki Reid, after the final win
The early games went badly. He finished last in one game before the two-hour mark, then took what he called a long-awaited first place in a Throne Room (王座の間) game soon afterward. He said his recent first-place rate was only around 10 percent, and he repeatedly told himself he would not give up on Asuna. A second-place finish later in the evening left his day’s total 0.3 points short of even, with a first place needed to push it positive.
That chance came in a Throne Room match late in the stream. Reid declared riichi with last place still a real possibility, then drew his winning tile himself for all simples with three dora, finishing first. “It’s a plus,” he said, and thanked the chat for staying with him. He closed by asking whether he and Asuna had made up, then said it had been painful all the way through.
Earlier in the stream he said he had been entered in an upcoming mahjong event for streamers, a team competition, in the class reserved for professional-level players. He said he was surprised by the placement and wanted to practice seriously beforehand.
